Taking Inventory of our Soul

This past Sunday (January 3), my prepared message focused on being present to God’s presence in our lives and how we need to pay attention to our lives. One way we can do this is by sitting quietly with questions. Reflecting on questions is like taking inventory of our soul. We’re examining what’s working and what isn’t working. We’re taking a look at what we need to keep and what we need to discard. Here are a series of questions…

An Advent Prayer

This prayer was offered yesterday in meeting as we recognized the first Sunday in Advent. A Prayer for the 1st Sunday in Advent It is never easy to wait… that may be why Advent is so hard for us But loving God, it is not so hard for you. You wait for us to turn from our old ways toward the life you desire for us. You wait for us to admit what we have done, and what we have failed…

“Deep River Friends” – A Poem by Jenny Sarvis

The following is a poem written by Jenny Sarvis. It’s a beautiful picture of Deep River Friends in it’s simplicity. Thank you Jenny for taking the time to put your thoughts on paper. It’s not much to talk about Some even drive right by. Never to notice. It sits tranquil As if to spectate The world gone awry. Three busy streets define, Stores wanting time and your soul. Appointments, must have, have to’s The wrong kind of rush. This simple…

“Making God’s Love Real”- Deep River Friends Tag Line

This past Sunday, the prepared message focused on what it would look like if we had as our “tag line” the phrase, “Making God’s Love Real”.  A “tag line” is basically a catch phrase or slogan that organizations use to describe in a few words their mission and focus. What if, for Deep River Friends, our focus and mission simply was,”Making God’s Love Real”? What would that look like in our personal lives? What would that look like in our…

Imagining A Different World…A World of Love

(Here is the text of Scott’s prepared message from yesterday (June 28). Our Podcast Master is on vacation so we have provided the hard copy on the blog) Deep River Friends June 28, 2015 “Imagining A Different World…A World of Love” Ephesians 3:14-21 We live in a hyper-connected world so it’s hard not to know, to some extent, what has been going on and what is dominating the headlines. In the last two weeks there was a tragic shooting in Charleston,…

Engaging North Carolina Yearly Meeting Concerns

In the past week we have emailed to everyone a series of options North Carolina Yearly Meeting is considering regarding it’s future. The emails provide detail descriptions of possible pathways our Yearly Meeting could take in the near future. These options range from creating a series of “associations” within North Carolina Yearly Meeting depending on theological alignment to expelling meetings that don’t align theologically with the Yearly Meeting’s stated positions. Along this continuum, there is an option which allows meetings…

“The Best Day of My Life” Poem…a Gift from Glen Chavis

Our friend, Glen Chavis, would like to share this wonderful poem with Deep River Friends. In Glen’s own words, this is why he would like to share it:  “I had a friend who died a few years ago that use to send this poem to her sick friends.  Gwen knew she only had a few years to live but she never gave up on life.  Maybe it will now help folks in our Meeting.” Glen goes on to add these thoughts…

The Beginning of Advent and Star Wars…May the Awakening Force Be With You!

I found it timely that the trailer for the new Star Wars movie came out this past week just as we were entering in to Advent. The title of the trailer was, “The Force Awakens”. As the trailer begins, you hear these words: “There has been an awakening. Can you feel it?”  Advent is about “awakening”. It is about being “awake” to the coming of the Living Christ. Over 2,000 years ago, there was an “awakening” when God entered this world…

Gift Cards and Monthly Meeting…This Week At Deep River Friends

As we begin a new week, a couple of opportunities exist in which you can participate and give your input and offer your presence. Gift Cards for Dave and Kat Smith As most of you know, Orion Wayne Smith entered this world on Sunday, November 2 at Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem. He is the new son of Dave and Kat Smith. Orion came a little earlier then planned. He was born premature at 25 weeks. He is receiving wonderful care…

Deep River Friends Meeting Blog and Connecting

Greetings Friends! There’s a good chance that most of you didn’t know that there is a “Deep River Friends” blog. That’s okay, we have not used it very much. But, since we have it, we would like to implement it more and use it as a resource for the meeting. I envision it being used in the following ways: Weekly articles that pertain to the life and mission of Deep River Friends Important updates and announcements Inspirational quotes and articles…
